Viburnum opulus is also known as the Guelder Rose and is a bushy, deciduous shrub with striking blooms and masses of bright, translucent red berries.
Its lobed, maple-like leaves turn fiery shades of red and purple in the autumn adding a glorious show of colour to the garden.
Most noted for its voluminous clusters of hydrangea-like flowers, this viburnum bursts into bloom from early May and the flowers are followed by the distinctive red berries that are adored by birds and other wildlife.
Recommended as a Plant for Pollinators by the RHS, you can be sure that this shrub is also a proven garden performer, robust and vigorous, and guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. Planting Advice for Viburnum opulus Guelder Rose:
- Select an appropriate spot for your plant, making sure that you give them enough space to grow to their full size.
- Dig a hole twice the width of the roots, forking over the bottom to loosen the soil, and add some good quality fertiliser such as Blood Fish & Bone (wash your hands afterwards!)
- Aim to plant at the same depth as the soil mark on the trunk.
- Holding the tree or plant upright in position with one hand, slowly backfill the hole with soil, and gently shake the plant, so the soil falls back around the roots.
- Use your heel to compact the soil around the plant to ensure good contact around the roots.
- If you're planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage and ballast.
- Use the best compost you can buy - our Premium Professional Compost mix is particularly good - and some sand or grit to aid drainage.
- You are again aiming to plant to the depth of the soil mark.
- Firm down as you fill, and press down hard with your heel when the pot is full.
Aftercare of your Viburnum Guelder Rose:
- Plant in any good soil in full sun or partial shade.
- Perfect for hedging, the Guelder Rose will tolerate exposed sites and coastal areas.
- Water regularly until established.
Pruning Advice for Guelder Rose:
- After flowering prune established specimens, removing up to one in five of the oldest and weakest branches to the base.
- Plants will also tolerate a harder, regenerate prune if they become poor shaped after a few years.
- Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant after pruning.
